What is Gone Together?
Gone Together is a social
networking website that allows people who travel often to keep informed when they
are physically near one another and would have the opportunity to meet and collaborate in real life.
"Gone Together provides an unprecedented opportunity to meet with your colleagues
or friends and family when you are already traveling on business or for any other
reason."
How is Gone Together is different from most social networking sites, like MySpace,
FaceBook, or LinkedIn? Gone Together is about socializing in the real world - these
other sites are about socializing online.
Take for example James, as a university professor
who travels 3 or 4 times a year to attend or speak at conferences in his field.
Now 3 to 4 trips a year doesn't sound like much traveling, but consider that James
has colleagues at universities around the country who also travel 3 to 4 times a
year. This provides many times when either James or his colleagues are traveling.
If James and his colleagues use Gone Together, they will be notified whenever two
of them are traveling near each other.
Suppose James is traveling to MIT in Cambridge, MA to attend a speech. That same week, his friend
Sally (from another university) is visiting a company in Boston, MA. Gone
Together will alert Sally and James that on that date, they will be nearby each other.
James could then invite Sally to meet for lunch to discuss a common research interest.
Without Gone Together, they might never have known they were just a few miles apart.
The scenario described above is perfect for
anyone who travels often and would benefit from face to face meetings with their
friends and colleagues.
